Community Service

4/26/2014

Hey Everyone! So this weeks blog topic is on community service. As Mr. M stated in his blog, we have had so much support from our community around us and I do think it's a good idea to do community service. Some community service ideas for our class to do is clean up the beaches, help the less fortunate, and do something for the elderly, troops and our veterans. But I think we should do community service maybe once every quarter because us being a media productions class and having our own projects to work on, we all have different and busy schedules.

I think that doing Community Service is a great idea! Besides giving back to our community, I think Community Service will do other terrific things! I believe that community service will help our class bond even more! I mean, this is a group activity and it will help us to get to know each other better. It also makes a difference. Even if it's just a small food drive or something, it makes a difference somewhere, to someone. Community Service also makes us realize how lucky we are. I don't think a lot of us realize this, but we are really lucky to have education, a home to live in, and a meal everyday! Thus, less food and other items won't be wasted as much. And another benefit of community service is that it builds character; you learn life skills and teaches good traits to have. For example, community service teaches you to be empathetic, unselfish, and to feel good about yourself. So yes, I do think that having our media class do a community service deed is a great idea!

Some ideas for our class to do community service is to do a beach clean-up! I mean, we are so lucky to live in Hawaii where we are able to go to the beach, swim freely, and play in the sand! But we want to make sure that this paradise can stay a paradise. Meaning, we should pick up any litter or trash at the beach! Not only is trash not a good sight for the beach, but trash also ends up in the water, where animals think it's food and might die from eating it! An example would be a turtle eating those soda can plastics and getting it stuck in their throat, thus, suffocating. Another idea for a community service project is to help the less fortunate. When I say help the less fortunate, I mean help those in need of support, those who are not as lucky as us. To help the less fortunate, we could have a food drive, or even a "soup kitchen" where we could prepare and serve meals. It would also be pretty cool if we did something for the elderly, our troops, and our veterans. I mean, it's good to help the elderly and we should give back to our troops and veterans! Maybe to help the elderly we could go to like a nursing home and help out there, or just talk to the people there! Maybe for our troops and veterans, we could make/write letters or send care packages or something.

I think our class should do community service maybe once a quarter. I would say more often, however, we are all very busy, working on our projects quarterly. I mean, we all have our different schedules so it would be hard to schedule one day that everyone is free.

In conclusion, I think our class should do community service because it helps us bond, it makes a difference, it makes us realize how lucky we are, and it teaches is life lessons and traits. We could do a beach clean up, help the less fortunate, and do something for the elderly, our troops, and our veterans. And we could do community service once a quarter because of our busy schedules. Thanks for reading! And make sure you read my reflective response, "Optimism is Key". Bye!!

Optimism is Key

Hey Everyone! So for this week's reflective response, I will be telling you about a very important life lesson I learned, to be optimistic. Lately, I've been surrounded by a lot of negativity in my life and found myself being a pessimist as well. If you don't know what a pessimist is, a pessimist is a person who looks at eveything in a negative way, a downer. And an optimist is the complete opposite, a person who thinks in a positive way, who's perspective thinks in a good way, rather than in a negative way. An metaphor you might be familiar with, "there is half of a glass of water. Do you see it as 'the glass is half full' or 'the glass is half empty'". If you see it as half full, then you think as an optimist, but if you see it as the glass is half empty, you think as a pessimist. So the important lesson I will tell you about today, is try to think as if the glass is half full, be optimistic. Being an optimistic is very important everywhere. If you go to class with a negative mind about the class, the class period may seem negative to you. However, if you keep an open mind, the class period may seem not as bad as you thought it would be. Being optimistic is especially important in our media productions class. As you all are aware of, in class we are watching our third quarter project PSA's; having a critique session. Instead of being pessimist, and not liking these critique sessions, you should be optimistic. Think positively, you shouldn't be hurt about what others say about your video, but instead, take it as advice and make from for improvement. That's it for this weeks reflective response! Thanks for reading! Make sure you read my constructed response, "Community Service" Bye!!

The Best and Worsts of Times

Hey Everyone! So for this weeks' constructed response, I will be telling you  the best and the worst times I experienced on this years STN trip to Florida. Meaning, I will tell you the three best things that stood out and some things I didn't like on the trip. So the three best things that happened on the trip was the Full Sail University, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and the STN closing ceremony. The only thing I didn't like, was that the schedule was so tightly packed that we didn't get enough sleep.

So the first thing I liked the most that I will be sharing with you is the Full Sail University tour. And if you want, you can read about the Full Sail University Tour in my blog, "Day Three: Live in 5..4..3..2.." The tour was great! I loved it! It was actually my very first time visiting a university, so it was cool getting to see their campus! Most of us, being in a Media Productions class, are probably interested in Arts and Communications when we grow up, so it's really cool getting to actually visit a school based on media. Another reason I liked the tour because it was inspiring. It was pretty cool how they have their own "Hall of Fame" building and we actually got to go in it. I mean, I think it's really cool how the graduates leave memorables behind, I saw an oscar, many medals, and even a script from Jaws! Being that we are all media students, a lot of us are planning to go into the media field when you grow up, so seeing all these awards, all these movies and certificates, I'd assume that you're thinking, "I want to win one of those one day." Especially how our Tour Guide, Victorica, talked about how the graduates get called up onto the stage and they have a whole ceremony about it. Another reason why I liked the tour was because it was very exciting and interesting. Despite having the best tour guide, the whole thing was great! I guess I was just really excited. Their campus is huge and it's really neat how they have a backlot full of fake sets for their students to film on! Overall, I thought the tour was amazing and if the CKTV class ever goes back to Flordia (in like 3 years?) you should go back here.

The next thing I liked the most about the trip is going to Disney's Hollywood Studios and if you want to read about it, you can read about it in my blog, "Day Five: The Fun In Science". Disney's Hollywood Studios was fun! It was something that you could go to and learn something new and still have fun, an educational theme park. We got a tour and by the name of my other blog, "The Fun In Science", the tour basically revolved around science in parks like Disney's Hollywood Studios. We got a tour there, and the tour was about how science comes into play in their theme parks, the role science plays on roller coasters with kinetic and potential energy, mass, velocity, force, etc. It was pretty coincidental, because prior, we were just learning about kinetic and potential energy and rollercoasters in Science. I liked Disney's Hollywood studios because you could have fun, and yet still learn. And the teachings helped in science class later.

And the last best thing I liked about the trip was the STN 2k14 Closing Ceremony! And you can read more about the closing ceremony where I talk about it in my blog, "And the Winner Is..." Yes this was straight off the top, one of my most favorite parts of the trip. I just loved it! It was really fun, with loud music, flashing lights, and a mixture of excited and worried faces. Even though Movie Trailer team didn't place, it was still a really good experience! We were good sports and appreciated the awards we did win. But the best part about it was getting to sit with all the Hawaii schools. All the schools from Hawaii sat in the far left corner, and each of us wore our own STN state shirt. It was pretty neat. The Hawaii schools cheered solid and chanted "HA-WA-II" even louder. I think it's safe to say that we represented the state well. It was also pretty funny because the Hawaii schools kept winning awards in a row. I'm really proud to say that I'm from CKTV and we come from Hawaii.

But the only downside of the trip is that we didn't get much sleep because of the so right schedule. We would go to sleep at like 12 and then have to wake up at like 3 in the morning to go to the airport. But pretty much the whole trip had a messy sleeping schedule. Most days we would arrive home late, and go to sleep around 11 or 12 then we would have to get up early again at 5 or 6. It just makes you tired through out the day, and trying to catch up on your sleep during the car rides but I remember one day we were at like this Disney's Hollywood Studios or something and all of us were dead zombies dying to keep our eyes open (pun). It's just I hope that in future trips maybe we can fit a bit more sleep time in there because no one likes to be tired during a fun trip.

In conclusion, this trip was amazing! I especially loved the Full Sail University tour, going to Disney's Hollywood Studio's, and the Closing Ceremony of the 2014 STN convention. But the only down side about the trip, is that there was so many things going on that we didn't get enough sleep for the next fun thrilling day. That's it for my constructed response! Thanks for reading, Byee!!

Helping Some Friends!

Hey Everyone! So as you know, Fourth Quarter projects have rolled in and filming starts soon. So for this weeks, reflective response, I will be writing about my experience helping Taylynn and Javlynn with their Music Video filming on this past Tuesday and Wednesday. They were doing the song, "Falling For You" by Colbie Callait and wanted me to be a background actor, or an Extra in their Music Video. So I thought, why not? I mean, we are all apart of the CKTV Ohana and we should help out our classmates. So originally the filming was on Tuesday with Javlynn filming, with Dodger and Taylynn as the main actors, extra's Isabel, Saul, and Lily, Rachel, and Kysen (Taylynn's friends) and myself. Apparently there was a dancing scene, so the Extras had to slow dance (which I wasn't too excited about). But the problem was, most of the actors didn't know how to slow dance, so they had to spend time teaching them. However, that filming didn't work out as planned because of everyone's tight schedule, some people had to leave early because they had sports practice or other after school activities. Next time, I suggest maybe doing a filming on the weekend maybe or when everyone's day is free to avoid the problem. So Taylynn and Javlynn scheduled another filming on Wednesday, this time at KCC and not at the school. This time Brandon and Taylynn were main actors, along with Javlynn, Taylynn's friend, and I as background actors. And Ben Brady also came to help them which was very nice! Filming again was okay, and I hope Taylynn and Javlynn were able to get some good shots and enough shots for they're music video. That's it for my reflective response! Thanks for reading, Bye!!

MVL: Most Valuable Lesson

4/11/2014

Hey Everyone! As you all know, the CKTV Media Productions class recently went up to Orlando, Florida for two weeks to compete at the Student Television Network convention. Spending two weeks in Florida, we have learned a lot of things; from spending time together to breakout sessions to STN. But are the most valuable I learned? I think the M.V.L. of the trip would be sportsmanship, cooperate together, and make everyone be apart of the CKTV Ohana.

My first valuable lesson I'd like to share with you is sportsmanship; be a good sport. I learned this at the STN convention because at STN, you need to be a good sport. Meaning, if you see other Middle Schoolers, be fair and be kind to then, and don't treat them bad just because your competing against them. I also learned you need to be a good sport during the closing ceremony. Meaning, when they are announcing the winners, clap for everyone. If you did place, don't insult the other schools and brag about it. Yes, it is a time to be happy but don't run it in their faces. Even if you didn't win, still clap-and don't be a sour lemon about it. Tell your teammates good job, and congratulate other teams that placed. And when you see other schools like Castaic, congratulate them and tell them good job! Being a good sport is very important, not only regarding STN, but regarding everything!

The next valuable lesson I'd like to share with you is to cooperate together. What I mean by this is to work together. When you work together, you can get more done and it makes everyone feel apart. I learned this at the STN convention, we all had to work together when we were competing in the Movie Trailer and Sweet Sixteen broadcast competitions. It's very vital that you work together and get along because if you don't, then everyone will start arguing, thus you won't get anything done and it will go haywire. Cooperating is especially important for Sweet Sixteen Broadcast. As you know, we are all split up into groups that create individual videos, then we give it to the main editor. The main editor then takes all of the groups submitions and puts it into one final video. So if you don't cooperate and get your groups individual video done, you can give it to the main editors. Not cooperating takes a toll and effects not only you.

My last valuable lesson kind of ties together with the previous lesson, make everyone feel apart of the CKTV Ohana. I can't really pinpoint a specific time where I learned this, but I'll say that it was the time spent with the class (I can't elaborate any more sorry). We spent a lot of time together and we all were able to bond with eachother. It's very important to make everyone feel like a whole in this class because if not, not only does it hurt their feelings, but it decreases the ability to cooperate because you might be fighting or arguing. Which then takes an effect on our class. But when you do treat everyone fairly, you develop more friendships with people, which is always good!

Overall, this trip has taught me lots of lessons, but the three most valuable lessons I learned was to be a good sport, cooperate with eachother, and treat everyone fairly, because we are a Ohana. I hope you enjoyed my blog! And make sure you go check out my reflective response, "Fourth Quarter Project" where I tell you about what I will be doing for Fourth Quarter. Thanks for reading! Bye!!

Fourth Quarter Project

Hey Everyone! Fourth Quarter is finally here! The year has gone by so fast! So for this week's reflective response, I will be writing to you about what I will be doing for my Fourth Quarter project. In fourth quarter, Mr. M gives us the privilege of working with anyone we want, and doing any type of video for our project. Meaning, you could do a news feature story (like how we had to do in First and Second quarter), or you could do another P.S.A. (like in Third quarter), or you could do a Music Video, Movie Trailer, Short Film, Commercial, or a different choice of video you have in mind! I chose to do a Music Video, with Justice. In summer camp, Justice and I were partners along with Javlynn, so it will be fun to get to work with her again. We talked about some songs, and we finally decided to do it on the song, "One Step At A Time" by Jordin Sparks. The song is about what the song suggests, taking things one step at a time. So whether you are learning a new thing, the song tells you to take your time and slowly work your way up to achieve your goal. Even though, sometimes it may be hard and challenging, you just need to try and with enough effort, you will succeed. We started on the treatment and script and we will work on it over the weekend, and hopefully are able to show it to Mr. M before Wednesday. That's all for my blog, I'll post more updates a

Hey Everyone! So as you all know by now, it's been over a week since we got back from our trip to Orlando, Flordia. Staying in Florida for two weeks has done me good; it was a fun and great learning experience. Not only did we get to visit a university and a news brodcast station, but we also got a tour around the Amway center, got the privalage to watch an official NBA game, going to theme parks and had tours, going to Gatorland, and we also got to compete at STN. But honestly, this whole trip wouldn't be possible if it weren't for Mr. M, our chaperones, and the support from everyone. So I'd just like to thank Aunty Cheryl, Aunty Shar, Aunty Linda, Uncle Glenn, Uncle Dale, Aunty Genevive and Mr.M. I'd also like to thank my parents and everyone else for the support in my fundraisers. This has been the best trip of my life! I learned so much and I got to bond with the class a lot. I don't know if you remember this blog: "How Excited Am I?" (If you don't, you can read it by clicking the hyperlink). Anyways, that blog was assigned by Mr. M, to write about your expectations for the Flordia Trip. I wrote about four expectations, number one to bond with the class, number two to meet our pen pals, number three to the STN convention, and number four, the tour of the Amway center and the game. Well, I'm just going to say straight off the bat, they were all met. I most definitely feel that I have bonded with the class; I feel much closer to some of them than I have before the trip (being that I spent 14 days with them). Not only did I get to meet both of my pen pals, but I also met my expectation of it. Both Kimberly and Brooke were really nice and I enjoyed the time I got to spend with them! My third expectation was the STN convention. Before the trip I didn't know what to expect. I was nervous, worried, and curious. But now that I have attended the convention, I know what to expect and I have a better idea of it. And my last expectation was the tour of the Amway center and the NBA game. The tour was pretty neat. They showed us around 7 floors! But I was a bit disappointed because I thought they were going to show us how they broadcasted the game, but the tour was great! You could tell media plays a big role In the Amway Center because they have a whole floor dedicated just for Media! The game was awesome also. I understood the game, and although the Orlando Magic lost, it was fun. Overall, my expectations were met and this trip has been great, yes great. Byee!!

My Advice to Next Year's Team

4/5/2014

Hey Everyone! So for this weeks assigned blog topic we are supposed to write about our advice for next year's CKTV class when competing at STN. As you all are familiar with, the media productions class went to Orlando, Florida to compete at the Student Television Network Convention. Our class ended up winning 5 of 8 awards: 2nd place Sweet Sixteen Broadcast, 1st place Spot Feature, 2nd place Anchoring, 2nd place Music video, and honorable mention PSA. I was apart of 2 teams, Movie Trailer and Sweet Sixteen broadcast. Unfortunately, Movie Trailer did not place, but that's okay because it was a good experience. My advice for next year's, 2015 CKTV class is to use your time wisely, be creative and have realistic ideas, and to be focused and calm.

This advice will be going for everyone-no matter what competition you are in, use your time wisely. This means don't procrastinate! Focus on your goal of meeting your deadline, don't rush everything or else your final product will turn out sloppy and messy. But also don't be a slow poke because then you won't get anything done and it reduces your time to submit your video and meet the deadline on time. You want to find a place in between the two, you want to balance and level yourself. Find a good pace, enough to do quality work, and enough to meet the deadline. And here's a tip for both competitions. When under a tight timed competition, multitask! These competitions are always in groups, so while two people are filming, the others can go and record or write voice overs. And if your in Broadcast Sweet Sixteen, one person can start editing while the others shoot stand-ups and voice overs. This way you will be using your time wisely-you'll be getting multiple things done in the same amount of time! If you ever heard of that expression, killing two birds with one stone! And for the new Movie Trailer team, this goes for you. Don't spend too much time thinking about your ideas. That means don't change your ideas a lot and make sure that idea is strong enough to carry out. If you take too much time thinking of your idea, you will have less production time to film, thus, cutting off of your editing time. But don't take too little time to plan and think of your idea. Your idea might not be good enough or strong enough for your group and you will find that out during the filming. So remember to take a reasonable amount of time to plan a good and strong idea to stick with.

My next advice (this is more toward movie trailer team) is to be creative but realistic when brainstorming for ideas. Let your mind open and let everyone pitch in ideas. Then narrow down your choices to your best idea. But you want to make sure your idea is something your team is capable of, enough to carry out throughout the competition. Make sure your idea is first off good, strong, and original. You want to keep in mind that the judges will be watching tons of videos, so you want yours to stick out from the pile. But remember from my first piece of advice, don't waste too much time thinking of your idea.

And my third piece of advice for both competitions is to be focused and calm. Yes, the competitions will be stressful and pressuring, but if you freak out it doesn't benefit your team. Take deep breaths and relax and picture the end result. Be focused. Don't doze off or get distracted or procrastinate. You need to realize that this is the real thing. That this is what you came here to do. Yes, you messed around during practices and had some fun but when it's competition time it's time to be serious. Get your head in the game and do your best.

These are my three pieces of advice I can offer the 2015 CKTV students. Use your time wisely, be creative but realistic, and be focused and calm. If you follow my advice, I promise you that your chances of placing is greater. Sweet Sixteen Broadcast and Movie Trailer are both great and fun competitions to compete in, and if you do choose these competitions, i suggest following my advice. That's it for my blog! Byee!!
